Here Are 5 Fun Ways to Stay Hydrated

Looking for some fun ways to stay hydrated?

As college students we are always on the go, always doing something. When we’re on campus all day, sometimes all we have time for is a soda from the nearest vending machine. Even though most colleges are making their vending machines healthier by including better choices, such as water, it is far more tempting to press the button for that nice ice cold pop.

It is commonly reported that our bodies are made up of 70 percent water; however, according to USGS men’s bodies are comprised of about 60 percent water, while women’s bodies are made up of around 55 percent water. Either way you look at it, that’s a lot of water! And all that water needs replacing.

Water is crucial to young adults, especially while studying. Coincidentally, studying is the perfect time to get your fluids in. Drinking water is the last thing I, personally, want to do. I’d much rather guzzle a nice 20oz soda. But the fact is water is healthier for the brain, which is an integral part of our success as college students.

Below are some fun ways to stay hydrated during our busy schedules:

•Set up a contest with your friends using one of the apps below to see who drinks the most water in a week. Loser pays for a round of bowling (or a movie, etc.)!

•Infuse your water with fruits and herbs to give it an extra kick!

•Set up a reward system. Every week you meet your water goals, do something nice for yourself.

Download the free app called Plant Nanny. You start out with a free plant and every time you drink water, you log it into the app. As you drink water, the plant gets watered. It’s a cute way to be responsible for not only your own water intake but also a cute little virtual plant’s well-being, too.

•Check out the iHydrate app. It takes a little bit to get set up, such as creating an account and entering height and weight, but it has features that Plant Nanny doesn’t. iHydate lets you put in whatever beverage you’re drinking, yes even soda, and calculates the percentage of water towards your daily goal. So even if you make one slip up or just need a small break from the water, this app will still count the water content in whatever beverage you choose to sip on. It also integrates with Fitbit and Jawbone as well as iPhone’s health app.

Whether you’re hitting the books or hitting the pavement, don’t forget to grab your bottle of water to stay hydrated on the go. There are more health benefits to water than just increasing brain power for study sessions. It can reduce headaches, keep the kidneys and other vital organs healthy, plus much more!

Visit your campus health center to find out more about the benefits of drinking your eight glasses of water each day.
